1a) The first people to theorize, rather than discover the existence of atoms, were the 5th century B.C philosophers Democritus and Leucippus. Ernst Rutherford was the first to actually prove that atoms existed through his research in the 19th century.
The first person to say there might be atoms was a Greek called Democritus. It wasn't until John Dalton came along in the early 1800s and explain how we could use atoms.
